The countryside was peaceful. The boy sat at the porch looking over the lush greens and the pretty flowers. Truly, nature was sometimes at its best when untouched by mankind’s innovative hands.
The boy sighs at the fresh air and stands. He walks out the fence gate and walks towards the woods. It was mostly quiet with the chirp of various birds that nestle in the trees. He walks till he reaches a clearing, there laid a mat and a woman who sat upon it. She looks up at the slight crunching of the grass and smiles at the boy.
“Hey,” she says while scooting over and patting the new empty space on the mat. “How’s the rabbit pen? Was it safely secured before you left ? I’d rather not have them eaten you know, brother.”
“They’re fine I’ve made sure of it. I wouldn’t have come out to see you if I didn’t.”
The woman chuckles. “Hm, what bring you out here?” she asks, her eyes on the sky studying the clouds. “I have been wondering but, why here?”
“Hm?”
“Why here of all places ? The rabbits would have been just as safe in the city ?” the boy asks. The countryside had many things to offer but he would be lying if he said he didn’t miss their previous home.
“Well, when I was younger, before you were born of course. Our grandparents owned this house. Most of the days I was here, gran watched the woods with a smile on her face. Apparently, this was her pride and joy so it felt fitting that when the time comes I would come here and watch it for her too.”
The boy stared at the woman, “Hm, I see.” She looked at him and said, “I want to protect it, it was her home and many creatures live here, too.”
“Well, I’ll stay here with you as long as I could anyway. Your answer was not going to change that,” the boy huffs. The woman chuckles again and pinches his cheek teasingly.
“Well then, let’s go before the sun sets. Maybe Althea still has some leftover cookies she made with her husband” the woman says as she folds up the blanket and leads her brother out of the woods.
