Soaring

Short Poem

Written by Baby Rucelle Cogal

Inability to hear, inability to walk,

Unable to see, and unable to talk,

It is always about what people are lacking,

But what about the skills and abilities they are having?

Pitying eyes,

Overly frustrated sighs

That’s what comprise the daily lives of people who are “disabled”

As what they are labeled.

But what is “normal”, really?

Why do people with disability felt the need to hide their disabilities?

Why do they have to feel the agonizing awkwardness of special treatments?

As if their disabilities make them a whole different kind of living being.

In a society, where people with special needs

Are seen with eyes of disgust or pity,

It takes a lot of courage to show that one’s disability

Is never equal to one’s capability.

Whether you’re stuck sitting on a wheelchair,

Staring into dark abyss, hearing nothing but silence,

Silent mumblings that equals to the loudest screams,

It shows how you are all brave enough to live in spite of everything.

To top it all, it is way harder

To not hate your impairment,

To accept it yourself, first and foremost,

That somehow, you could never be like any other.

But that’s what makes you rare,

Special in your own way,

And I hope that despite it all,

You soar high enough, it makes you feel free.
