Knock. Knock. Knock.
“Come in.”
“Miss Bautista?”, a staff member called me from the newly opened door.
“Yes, Rilee?”, I replied as I turned away my gaze from my phone.
“It would be your turn to give a message after the current speaker.”
“Ah, yes. I understand, I’ll go outside now. Thank you, Rilee.”
“Okay, Miss.”
I proceeded to go outside the dressing room and waited backstage.
“Thank you very much for that wonderful message, Miss Louise. So, for our next speaker, let us welcome Miss Marcella Bautista!”
I heard several claps from people and walked towards the stage with a confident smile as I began to start my speech.
A woman should only be two things: who she wants and what she wants – not what others perceive her to be. Because a woman is a woman, not just a mere woman.
As our world continues to change, somewhere down the years, women are able to be more than just housewives and become the most challenging thing ever. But some people are afraid to accept this reality. They are envious of women who are able to flaunt their own skin, they are afraid of women who can speak her mind and heart out, and they are intimidated by women who can walk with heels higher than their standards.
In this society we live in, it is incredibly disappointing how after all this time, some people’s mindset and mentality still haven’t changed. They throw hate on women who are confident, who are knowledgeable, and who can stand on her own two feet, since they are so caught up in their own idea of what a woman is and how she should behave.
But we know better. We know our worth and we aren’t scared to keep our heads high. Because we, women, can fight. We fight our own battles – with our own unique ways. We, women, should empower and appreciate other women. And the same goes for men. They should stop the mindset that one gender is above the other. The world would be much more beautiful, if only people would encourage each other rather than bring others down. Everyone has its own fair share of challenges, be it men and women. That is why, there is no point in trying to bring others down.
Being a woman is tough because we could either be a mother, a sister, a wife, a businesswoman, and many more at the same time. And I would like to take this chance to say that I am so proud of every woman out there. I appreciate every girl and woman who are confidently living the life she wants and not letting herself be bound by the labels given by other people. To all who are listening, never ever let someone taint your glow and belittle your worth. Happy International Women’s Day to all!
As I ended my speech, I heard the loud applause of the people and I walked backstage with a full heart.
“Hey, mom, wherever you are, thank you for guiding me to become the woman I am right now. Before I became the person able to inspire others, you were my inspiration first. You will always be the strongest and bravest woman for me.”
